Congrats to all of our new members voted in at our meeting last night at the Light Horse in Alexandria! It was a great night of Brotherhood which included the planning of this year's training and fund raising evnets. It was also nice to see some old faces we haven't seen in a while.

DC Firefighters Burn Foundation Bowling Tournament

We would like to thank those chapter members who were able to represent us at the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation Bowling Tournament at Bowlmor Lanes in Bethesda. Once again the tournament sold out in a matter of days and raised a lot of money.

Remembering Brother Josh Weissman

It is with great sadness that Alexandria Fire Chief Adam K. Thiel announced the death of Joshua Weissman at 4:25pm on Thursday, February 9,2012.

While responding to a car fire on Interstate 395 near Glebe Road on the evening of February 8, Paramedic Weissman fell from the roadway, where he suffered a severe head injury. He was rescued by City of Alexandria and Arlington County Firefighters and Paramedics, with assistance from the City of Alexandria and Arlington County Police Departments and the Virginia State Police. Despite valiant efforts by the medical team at the Washington Hospital Center, Paramedic Weissman’s injuries proved to be fatal.

Joshua Weissman, 33, of Bristow, VA. was a seven-year veteran of the Alexandria Fire Department, and was hired in April 2006.

Weissman worked at one time for Bangs Ambulance as a first responder. He joined the Cayuga Heights Fire Department as a teenager.

Cayuga Heights Fire Chief George Tamborelle described Weissman as dedicated to the profession. He even met his wife at the fire department.

"He was completely dedicated to helping others from the time he was 16," Tamborelle said. "All he's wanted to do was be a firefighter and a paramedic, and he's done that."

Our chapter will be assisting the Central Maryland Fools with their dinner event at the Fisher House Complex at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center NSA/Bethesda on January 25th starting at 11:00 am. We will be providing the desserts for about 50 - 60 people. Please let Danny know if you can help out in any way so he can let brother Bob Faas (CMD Fools) know what we will be bringing.

For those who don't know, the Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or combat injury.

There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. The Fisher House program has served more than 120,000 Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine families, and have made available over 3.6 million days of lodging, and a savings of over $167,000,000 to family members since the program originated in 1990.

By law, there is no charge for any Coast Guard or Marine family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House!

On April 8, 2011, five brother firefighters from the District of Columbia Fire Department were injured and burned while battling a house fire. Soon thereafter, the District of Columbia Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 36, put out a notice that the Blood Services Center at Washington Hospital Center needed blood donors to help our injured brothers. The response was awesome, but now the Blood Services Center needs to replenish their stock. This is the very same blood bank that any firefighter in the DC metro area would be using if they were burned, and transported to the Burn Center at MedSTAR, including all of us.
